How Enterprise Vault.cloud works
The Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud service securely stores all emails sent or received by your email
server in offsite data centers, freeing you from the expense and effort involved in storing and
managing huge amounts of email in-house.
- Service activated by Symantec.cloud and welcome email sent to customer
- Customer uses Active Directory integration tool to import user lists & schedule automatic synchronisation of new users
- Open firewall to Symantec.cloud data centre IPs
- Create journaling contact, create SMTP connector, configure TLS and activate journaling
- As email is sent and received within the primary email system, a copy of each message (including internal email) is sent to the data center
- Email and attachments are de-duplicated and securely stored along with relevant metadata
- Mail can easily be retrieved from the hosted archive by users within the company

Are there optional add-on features to Enterprise Vault.cloud?
A. Yes, specifically;
Folder Synchronisation
Folder Synchronisation is an add-on feature for Enterprise Vault.cloud which synchronises users’ Outlook
folder structures in their archive, allowing them to browse their archives just as they would their
inboxes. As a result, users are more productive since they are able to easily switch between their inbox
and archive, while maintaining a single view of their mailboxes.
Mailbox Continuity
Symantec Enterprise Vault Mailbox Continuity.cloud, an add-on feature, helps maximise email availability
and guard against the disruption and data loss that can result from an email outage. The service provides
organisations with a hosted email failover system that automatically* activates when an outage occurs,
allowing users to continue sending and receiving messages through their active internet connection –
without interruption.
* requires Symantec Email Security.cloud.
SharePoint Archiving
Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud for Microsoft SharePoint allows organisations to proactively prepare for
legal discovery requests or other investigations involving files stored in SharePoint. Enterprise
Vault.cloud captures files from SharePoint document libraries in a centralised and tamper-proof online
repository. All files are indexed upon capture so that they can be searched and exported based on specific
keywords or other file characteristics. SharePoint files can be retained based on global or granular
retention policies – and remain in the archive, even if they are deleted from SharePoint. In addition,
archived SharePoint files can be placed on legal hold and/or preserved according to global or granular
retention policies. Administrators can also setup specific policy alerts so that appropriate personnel are
notified if a file uploaded to SharePoint violates company policy. Enterprise Vault.cloud offers unlimited
storage of SharePoint files for a predictable monthly fee.
Salesforce Chatter Archiving
Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud for Salesforce Chatter allows employees at highly-regulated organisations
to engage in valuable Chatter interactions, while satisfying compliance and discovery requirements.
Enterprise Vault.cloud leverages native APIs to archive Chatter posts, including private and public messages
and attachments, in a centralised and tamper-proof online repository. All posts are indexed upon capture so
that they can be searched and exported based on specific keywords or message characteristics. Posts and
related attachments can be placed on legal hold or retained based on global or granular retention policies –
and remain in the archive, even if they are deleted from Chatter. Administrators can also setup specific
policy alerts so that appropriate personnel are notified if a Chatter post or attachment violates company
policy. Enterprise Vault.cloud offers organisations unlimited storage and retention of Chatter posts and
attachments for a predictable monthly fee.
Box File Archiving
Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud for Box allows end users to continue managing and collaborating with others
on their critical files in the cloud, while helping their organisations satisfy compliance and discovery
requirements. Enterprise Vault.cloud uses the native Box API to securely capture, store and index files
(and associated metadata) stored in Box (starting from the date of initial account creation). Archived
files can then be quickly searched and exported directly from the archive, even if they are temporarily
unavailable or no longer exist in Box. In addition, archived Box content can be placed on legal hold and/or
preserved according to global or granular retention policies. Administrators can also setup specific policy
alerts so that appropriate personnel are notified if content uploaded to Box violates company policy.
Enterprise Vault.cloud offers organisations unlimited storage and retention of Box files for a predictable
monthly fee.
Q. What is Enterprise Vault.cloud?
A. Enterprise Vault.cloud is a purely hosted email archiving service designed to help companies of all sizes address
the challenges of storage management, legal discovery, and regulatory compliance for electronic
communications.
Q. How long has Enterprise Vault.cloud been available for?
A. The service has been available under the name Email Archiving.cloud since June 2010. It is now available as
Enterprise Vault.cloud.
Q. Are the features and functionality of Enterprise Vault.cloud identical to those of the
Enterprise Vault on-premise offerings?
A. No. Delivering on-premise products is much different than delivering software-as-a-service email archiving, both from
a technology and user experience standpoint. These are two distinct offerings that use different
approaches to solving the business challenges of compliance, mailbox management and e-discovery for
electronic communications. Enterprise Vault on-premise also addresses these challenges for other
content types such as files, SharePoint and databases.
Q. What are the key differences between Enterprise Vault and Enterprise Vault.cloud?
A. Enterprise Vault and Enterprise Vault.cloud both help address the business challenges of email
compliance, mailbox management and eDiscovery for electronic communications.
Enterprise Vault provides robust eDiscovey and storage optimisation for data beyond electronic
communications, such as files, databases and Sharepoint. The on premise offering also provides
capabilities to collect such content outside the archive itself for use in eDiscovery.
Enterprise Vault.cloud is a purely hosted email archiving solution that does not require any hardware or software
on-premise. It provides unlimited storage and retention for electronic communications in remote
datacenters for a flat fee per mailbox per month.
Q. What is the difference between Enterprise Vault.cloud and the Enterprise Vault
Cloud Connector for Nirvanix?
A. The Symantec partnership with Nirvanix provides the ability for the Enterprise Vault version 10 to
leverage cloud based storage from Nirvanix as a second-tier for infrequently accessed archived
information in a hybrid model.
Enterprise Vault.cloud is a 100% SaaS-based product and all information is stored within the Enterprise
Vault.cloud datacenter.
Q. Is Enterprise Vault.cloud reserved to small and medium businesses?
A. No, Enterprise Vault.cloud is being adopted by customers of all sizes and across all industries.
Q. If I have a legacy archive, what is the migration process to Enterprise Vault.cloud?
A. There are two phases to the migration of on premise archive to the Enterprise Vault.cloud service:
Extraction
Customers have the option to do the extraction themselves or engage one of Symantec’s certified 3rd
party vendors to facilitate the extraction into one of the supported formats.
Ingestion
Migrated data will need to be shipped to the Enterprise Vault.cloud data center directly via a USB hard drive or DVD. File formats supported by Enterprise Vault.cloud for ingestion are PST, NSF, EML and MSG.
There is a cost per GB for both the extraction (if involving a 3rd party vendor) and the ingestion.
Q. Is Enterprise Vault.cloud available globally?
A. The service is available globally apart from a small number of countries that are subject to Trade
& Compliance restrictions.
Q. What are the key benefits of Enterprise Vault.cloud?
A. Enterprise Vault.cloud is a purely hosted service, which means there is no mandatory hardware,
software, or plug- ins to purchase, install and maintain. A flat service fee facilitates budgeting
and ensure cost predictability. The service is quick and easy to set-up and highly intuitive to use.
Q. How can Enterprise Vault.cloud help me address mailbox management issues?
A. Because it provides unlimited storage and retention of electronic communications in secure, redundant
datacenters, Enterprise Vault.cloud enables email admins to prune entire emails and attachments directly
from the mail server by leveraging native policy capabilities. End users maintain access to archived
content via rapid search and retrieval of the archived content, thus providing them with virtually
unlimited mailboxes.
This allows to reduce the email server storage footprint, improving server performance and reducing
the backup window.
Q. How does the Enterprise Vault.cloud service work?
A.
1. An administrator sets up accounts, permissions and configures policies.
2. An administrator sets up a mail connector, journaling and a secure TLS connection on your email server, leveraging its built-in functionality.
3. When email is sent and received through the primary email system, a copy of each message (including
internal email and attachments) is sent directly to Symantec.cloud’s geographically dispersed data centers.
4. Email and attachments are de-duplicated and securely stored along with relevant metadata.
5. Authorised users can easily access archived email via Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Web
Access, IBM Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, BlackBerry devices or a web browser.
Q. What support and service level agreements do you provide?
A. We provide expert staffing and 24/7 support from Symantec.cloud experts. Our Service Level
Agreement provides a money back remedy if availability of 99.9% is not met.
