How Backup Exec.cloud works
1. Begin by logging onto the web management console.
2. The service agent is deployed to target systems (desktops, laptops, and servers) using email,
redistributable package or direct download.
3. Backup policies are created in the console by selecting the files and folders to protect and setting
desired backup schedule.
4. An initial backup is performed and data is encrypted during transmission over the Internet and
while at rest in secure, off-site Symantec.cloud facilities.
5. Automatic backups occur silently in the background using incremental backups at the block level and
bandwidth throttling to optimize bandwidth usage and minimize performance impact to other systems.
6. The web-based management console is used for ongoing maintenance including adding new systems,
managing data volumes, and viewing the status of backups.

Q. What is Backup Exec.cloud?
A. Backup Exec.cloud is an online-based service that helps businesses protect critical data on Windows®
desktops and servers with simple, affordable, backup and recovery.
Flexible agent deployment options and a wizard-based installation helps customers get started in minutes
and no hardware purchase is required. The service can be set up in three easy steps: Log on, deploy agents,
and configure backup policies. The service will then run quietly in the background, automatically storing
data in a highly secure, enterprise class, off-site data centers. Should disaster strike, the service
will help businesses stay up running by restoring critical files from any Internet connected location.
Q.Who can benefit from Backup Exec.cloud?
A.Backup Exec.cloud is an ideal solution for small businesses interested in offloading their IT
infrastructure. It can also be used for larger organizations that need to protect the data of remote
workers, mobile workers or smaller offices.
Q. How is Backup Exec.cloud different from Backup Exec™?
A. Backup Exec.cloud and Backup Exec 2010 are two separate, stand-alone Symantec offerings with different
sets of functionality and different management experiences. While they both help customers address their
business requirements for data protection, Backup Exec.cloud is built on a technology platform that is
optimized for cloud-based delivery. Customers with larger data sets, advanced applications and a
preference for onsite backup and recovery benefit from Backup Exec 2010, while businesses or locations
with smaller data sets and are primarily using Windows file servers, Exchange or SQL benefit from Backup
Exec.cloud.
Q. How does the service secure my data?
A. Data is secured during transmission using 128 bit SSL military grade encryption. Once it is at rest in
our tier 4, SAS 70 certified data centers, it is protected using 256 AES encryption. The web-based portal
used to manage, configure and manage the service is secured with an https connection.
Q. How long will the service keep my data?
A. Data that you actively backup or keep within your backup set will be available for the life of your
subscription. When you delete an item or update it with a newer version, the previous version will remain
in the Symantec.cloud data center for 90 days before it is automatically deleted. The 90 day window begins
counting down once a new version of the file has been backed up or deleted. This helps to maximize storage
as well as provide previous versions to return to if you make a mistake and need to undo changes you've
made.
Q. What are the bandwidth requirements?
A. No minimum amount is required. After an initial complete backup is performed, only incremental (just
changed data) backups of file changes occur. This allows for the service to continuously perform backup
quietly in the background with a minimal amount of bandwidth required. The completion time of the initial
backup will vary based on the connection type/speed of the customer and the volume of data being backed
up. Download speeds and backup duration can be estimated using a number of Web-based connection testing
sites: Examples include: www.speakeasy.net/speedtest,
http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-speed-test/.
Q. What platforms is the service compatible with?
A. Windows Servers and desktops, Exchange Server & SQL environments are supported.
Q. How is Backup Exec.cloud licensed?
A. Subscription-based pricing is used that is based on a customer’s desired level of storage
($7 per GB/per year) according to their needs. There are no per user licensing fees and if more storage
is needed, it can be added to the subscription at any time.
Q. Where will Backup Exec.cloud services be available?
A. Backup Exec.cloud is available in the United States ,Canada and Western Europe. It will be localized
in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Q. How can I buy Backup Exec.cloud?
A. Backup Exec.cloud is available through Symantec registered partners in the US and Canada, and is
available direct from Symantec via the
online eStore.
Q. Is a free product trial available?
A. Backup Exec.cloud can be trialed for free through our
online eStore.
